Budget Buyer’s FAQs on Excavator Parts & Drilling Rigs: What My 6-Year Spreadsheet Taught Me

Turned out the Kelly bar had worn down to the point where the torque wasn't transferring properly. 7. Is it worth buying a forklift attachment for my skid steer instead of a dedicated forklift?

If you need forklift capabilities once a week or less, the attachment makes sense. A good excavator front loader or a forklift carriage for a skid steer costs about $1,500–$3,000, and you can swap it out in minutes. But if you're running forklift duties daily, a dedicated forklift will save you time and frustration. The constant swapping, the reduced visibility, and the fuel inefficiency of running a skid steer for simple fork work will eat into your productivity.

When I compared our Q1 and Q2 results side by side—same job site, different equipment—using a dedicated forklift vs. a skid steer with forks saved us about 15% in labor time. That's a lot of hours over a year.

8. What about buying a used road roller from an auction?

Auctions are risky. I've seen people walk away with incredible deals, and I've seen people buy what looked like a solid machine only to find out it had been "painted over" severe rust.

My rule: if you can't drive the road roller yourself and test the vibratory system at different frequencies, don't bid more than 50% of market value.
