Final notes: three traps we still watch for
Fuel pump. The word gets used with a lot of confidence. 'It has to be the fuel pump.' Sometimes it is. Often it isn't.
I have processed parts and service orders for construction and rental fleets since 2017. Between then and the end of 2024, I personally made six significant diagnostic mistakes, totalling roughly $6,300 in wasted parts, freight and downtime. This checklist exists because my bad guesses got expensive.
Use it when: a JCB telehandler or loader starts but loses power under load; an attached hydraulic breaker cycles slowly or stops; a Westinghouse generator runs at no load but sags as soon as you turn something on; or your plan is to order a replacement part before measuring anything.
Six steps. Do them in order. Write down the result of each one.
Step 1: Recreate the symptom under load, not at idle
Fuel starvation is load-dependent. A machine with a weak fuel supply will often idle perfectly. The problem shows up when the engine has to produce real power. So run the machine warm, put a load on it, and watch what happens.
On a JCB machine with a hydraulic breaker, this matters. Operate the breaker and watch the engine. If the engine RPM drops hard every time the breaker fires, the engine may be the problem. The breaker is just acting as a test load. If the engine stays at governed RPM and the breaker still hits weakly, the problem is more likely on the hydraulic side.
That single observation would have saved us about $1,850 in September 2022. The breaker was sent out for a rebuild. It came back fine. The loader engine could not hold RPM when the hydraulic pump demanded full flow. The real fault was a pinhole in a fuel line.
Step 2: Check the fuel supply before you blame the pump
On a diesel machine like the JCB 510-56, fuel goes through the tank pickup screen, the primary filter, the water separator, the secondary filter, and then the pump. A restriction in any of those looks exactly like a bad fuel pump. It also behaves the same way: fine at idle, weak under load.
Check the tank cap vent first. Then check the pickup screen. Then change the fuel filters. If water or algae comes out, stop looking at the pump until the tank has been cleaned. This is not glamorous work, but it resolves a large percentage of 'weak under load' complaints.
The same logic applies to a Westinghouse generator with a small gasoline engine. The fuel cap vent gets blocked. The tank develops a vacuum. The pump cannot pull fuel against that vacuum. A loose fuel cap often makes the problem disappear, and a new pump would not have fixed anything.
Step 3: How to tell if fuel pump is bad (measure it)
The answer is not to listen to the pump or guess from the symptom. It is to measure pressure and flow. An engine does not care what the part is called. It cares whether it gets enough fuel at the right pressure while working.
For a generator engine, install a fuel pressure gauge at the carburettor inlet and compare the reading to the manufacturer's specification. On many small engines, expected fuel pressure is only a few PSI. If you test expecting automotive-style pressure, you will wrongly condemn a healthy pump.
There is a second check that is often skipped: volume. Disconnect the fuel line at the carburettor, route it into a container, and crank the engine for a measured number of seconds. You should see a steady stream. A pump can make pressure but still deliver too little volume under load.
One Westinghouse generator lesson cost us a full Saturday in 2021. The engine stumbled under load. I ordered a new pulse-type fuel pump, installed it, and the problem stayed. The old pump was fine. The small pulse line from the crankcase was cracked, so the pump was not receiving pulses. Check pulse lines, breather hoses and vacuum lines before replacing a pulse pump. That advice would have saved roughly $90 and most of the weekend.
Step 4: Isolate the hydraulic breaker from the machine
Before anyone opens a JCB hydraulic breaker, the carrier needs to be ruled out. A hydraulic breaker is a conversion device. It takes oil flow from the machine and converts it into impact energy. If the machine does not deliver enough flow or pressure, the breaker will feel dead even if every internal component is perfect.
Work through these checks in order:
First, confirm the quick coupler is fully seated. A partially seated coupler will restrict flow severely and the breaker will behave exactly like a machine with an internal fault.
Second, check the breaker's nitrogen charge. Most hydraulic breakers use a nitrogen-filled accumulator or piston chamber. If the charge is low, the breaker gets slow, weak, or stops striking altogether. This is one of the most commonly ignored checks. Recharging nitrogen is far cheaper than buying a rebuild kit.
Third, check tool bushings and the breaker tool itself. A seized or worn bushing can make the breaker look weak. Operators describe it as 'no power', but the real issue is mechanical binding in the front head.
Do not order JCB hydraulic breaker seal kits before completing those checks. I learned that the expensive way: a breaker was removed from service, rebuilt, and reinstalled, only to behave the same way. The fault was in the carrier's auxiliary circuit.
Step 5: Use the JCB 510-56 parts manual correctly
When the diagnosis points to actual parts, identification matters more than speed. A JCB 510-56 parts manual is the correct reference for the telehandler itself. It is not necessarily the reference for the attachment bolted to it. The breaker has its own parts listing, usually identified by its own serial number.
People make this mistake constantly, and I made it in June 2023. I ordered a service kit for an attachment by quoting the machine model instead of the attachment serial number. The parts manager asked for the attachment serial. I told him it did not matter. It did. The kit did not fit, freight was wasted, and the machine stayed down an extra two days.
A genuine JCB 510-56 parts manual also tracks serial breaks. A 2019 machine and a 2023 machine can use different filters, hoses, brackets and seals even though they share the same commercial model name. Check the serial plate, check the parts manual, and if you are using an online portal, enter the actual serial number rather than trusting a generic PDF.
One more thing: by 2025, the official parts systems mostly do this work for you. Use them. An old downloaded parts manual can be a starting point, but it does not replace the current parts database.
Step 6: Bench-test and inspect before final assembly
Before you put everything back together, look at the parts around the failed component. A new fuel pump will not fix a cracked suction line. A rebuilt breaker will not fix worn mounting pins. A generator will not run correctly if the ground wire is corroded.
This is also where a workshop tool earns its keep. When a breaker mounting pin seized in our shop in March 2024, we spent an afternoon drilling it out carefully on the drill press. That was not a dramatic repair. It was a seized pin, a worn bushing, and a rattle that made the whole attachment feel broken. No hydraulic part would have fixed it.
Bench-test the old fuel pump before discarding it. Test the breaker's movement by hand where possible. Compare old and new parts side by side. If the only difference is the shiny paint, stop and reconsider.
Final notes: three traps we still watch for
First, restrictions on the suction side of a fuel system recreate every classic fuel pump symptom. On the Westinghouse generator, check the tank vent, the inline filter, and the pickup screen before buying a pump. On a diesel JCB machine, do the same with filters, water separator and tank pickup.
Second, a machine that loses power only under load is not automatically a fuel system problem. It can also be an air filter, a turbo hose, a fuel return line restriction, or a failing injection component. Work through the list.
Third, respect the difference between a machine parts manual and an attachment parts manual. The JCB 510-56 parts manual covers the telehandler. The JCB hydraulic breaker has its own serial number and its own parts breakdown. Mixing them up creates returns, delays, and a lot of unnecessary freight charges.
None of this is sophisticated. It is just disciplined. Take the measurement, isolate the circuit, identify the correct part, and inspect everything around it. That process has caught forty-something potential errors in our shop over the last eighteen months. It will not make you rich, but it will keep you from turning a $90 fuel pump mistake into a $1,850 breaker rebuild mistake.
