How to Load a Mini Excavator on a Trailer: A JCB Inspector's Field Notes

Tuesday, 6:47 a.m. The yard light was still blinking yellow when I locked my truck. A white Ford F-350 idled by the fence with a dusty tandem-axle trailer behind it, and a guy in a heavy canvas jacket was leaning on the receiver hitch, nursing a travel mug like he'd been there for an hour.

That's Mike. He runs a one-truck excavation outfit south of Salt Lake City, and he had a 7:30 start at a footing job out by Lehi. On his ticket that morning: a small JCB telehandler (the compact Loadall class that rental fleets can't keep in stock), a plate compactor, and a submersible sump pump for the wet bottom of the excavation. He was also hauling his own mini excavator to the site on the trailer behind him.

Before I go further, here's what I do. I'm the quality and delivery manager at a full-line JCB dealer in the Mountain West. Every machine that leaves on rent or sale crosses my inspection first—roughly 300 units a year, from backhoe loaders and telehandlers to plate compactors and pumps. In our Q1 2025 audit, I flagged about 6% of first deliveries out of the wash bay for prep or documentation issues. I'm picky about the small stuff because, as you're about to see, the small stuff becomes big stuff on a trailer.

The plate compactor that rewrote my inspection routine

When I started this job, I assumed the job was the iron. Engine hours. Hydraulic oil. Pivot pins. Track tension. Everything I'd read about equipment inspection said the same thing, and it's not wrong—the machine itself matters. But in November last year, a customer returned a rental plate compactor with a dented tank, a cracked handle, and $1,700 worth of damage that had nothing to do with the compactor. It had shifted on his trailer because he hooked a single strap through the lifting eye instead of the manufacturer's tie-down points. Nine miles later, the compactor was on its side against the fender. Nothing else on the trailer had moved.

That incident cost us three lost rental days and one deeply embarrassed contractor. It also added a rule to every walkaround: if you're hauling equipment, we check the hauling before we check the machine. Honestly, that one change has saved more equipment than any oil sample I've ever taken.

How to load a mini excavator on a trailer

Back to Mike. He waved off the clipboard. “It's all good. I looked at the telehandler last week. Just grab the Loadall and the compactor and I'm gone before Lehi traffic.”

He wasn't wrong about the telehandler. I'd inspected it three days earlier, and if you've ever spent time around a small JCB telehandler, you know the punchline: they're stubbornly reliable. Good boom reach, solid stabilizers, legible load chart. The safety standard for this machine class, ANSI/ITSDF B56.6, leans on the load chart at the rated position, so I always check that decal. The quick-hitch pins seated with a clean click. The telehandler was ready. But Mike wasn't hauling the telehandler to the job. He was hauling the mini excavator—the part he hadn't looked at in a year.

“Show me how you load that,” I said, and walked to the trailer. The short answer to how to load a mini excavator on a trailer is never about the excavator. It's about four things that surround it.

The trailer was rated for 7,000 lb gross vehicle weight. The mini excavator—a 1.7-tonne class machine—weighed about 3,900 lb with its bucket and a full tank. Under the rating, with room to spare. That part he got right. It was everything after that which concerned me.

Ramps first. He had six-foot ramps against the dovetail. The deck sat about two feet off the ground, which basically put the approach angle near 19 degrees. The operator's manual for that excavator is explicit about the maximum loading angle, and six-foot ramps put you over it—especially on a damp morning. The night before it had rained, and wet track pads on smooth steel ramps get greasy fast. I've seen a mini excavator crab sideways mid-ramp when the operator hit the throttle instead of idling up. Nobody got hurt, but the bucket carved a nice arc in the lot. Short version: find a dirt bank to flatten the approach, or bring eight-foot ramps.

Tie-down points were next. Mike had two ratchet straps, both two-inch, and the working load limit tags were long gone. His plan was to wrap them around the counterweight and the bucket cylinder guard. That's where I stopped him. Compact excavators have specific tie-down points, usually on the track frame, front and rear. You use all four. The FMCSA cargo securement rules, 49 CFR Part 393, require the combined working load limit of your tie-downs to be at least half the machine's weight—and a strap without its tag is a guess. I've seen identical-looking two-inch straps rate anywhere from 2,000 to 5,400 lb. The tag is the whole point.

Position and hydraulics. He'd parked the machine with the blade over the tail end. For his model, the manual specified blade toward the tongue, boom centered, bucket resting on the deck. I didn't argue from memory; I pulled the manual out of the cab's storage box—it was under a greasy pair of gloves—and showed him the page. The machine will do what the manual says. The manual doesn't lie. It's the guy who doesn't read it that causes the trouble.

Then the last step, the one everyone forgets: lower the blade and bucket to the deck, kill the engine, and cycle the pilot controls to bleed hydraulic pressure. A machine sitting with pressure in the lines can do surprising things when a strap shifts—not the kind of surprise you want at highway speed.

So where are JCB excavators made?

While I was grabbing a set of straps with legible tags, Mike asked the question I get once a month: “So where are JCB excavators made, anyway? My brother-in-law swears they're all built in England.”

Not all of them. The company is headquartered in Rocester, England, and it still builds a lot of machines there. But JCB also has major plants in Savannah, Georgia; Ballabhgarh, India; and Sorocaba, Brazil, plus others. On our lot, we've taken delivery of US-built and UK-built compact machines in the same model family, depending on the production year. The honest way to answer “where are JCB excavators made” is to check the serial plate on the side frame—plant code, serial number, country of origin. That plate matters to me because it tells me which parts catalog and service manual to pull. (Note to self: I should really laminate a “where in the world” map for the waiting room.)

By the time the straps were cinched, the parts runner had loaded the plate compactor and the sump pump into the bed of Mike's truck. I glanced at the pump's power cord and stopped him.

“That's a 100-foot 16-gauge extension cord feeding a one-horsepower submersible,” I said. “Voltage drop. The pump will run, but it'll run hot and trip your GFCI by mid-morning. You'll be back here trading in a pump that isn't broken. You need 12-gauge for that run.”

He looked at the cord like it had insulted his family. “So the pump's fine and my cord is the problem.”

“The pump's fine and the cord is the problem,” I confirmed.

It took eleven minutes to fix the tie-downs, reposition the excavator, and swap the cord. Mike looked at his watch, shook his head, and drove off. I didn't think much about it until the telehandler came home three days later.

“Send me a photo of that page,” he said, meaning the loading diagram. “My brother's buying a mini excavator next month, and he's going to haul it on a gooseneck. I'm going to make him read the manual before he touches a trailer.”

What I keep re-learning

Looking back, I should have added those loading pages to every rental packet months earlier. At the time, I figured that guys who haul equipment for a living know how to tie it down. That assumption cost us a plate compactor in November, and it could have cost a lot more later—not because Mike was careless, but because nobody had shown him the missing piece.

Here's the part I keep re-learning: the failures that hurt are never the exotic ones. It's not the engine that ruins your week. It's the five-minute shortcut at the end of a long morning. A checklist is the cheapest insurance I know. Trailer GVWR. Ramp length. Tie-down points. Working load limit tags. The manual in the cab. Five minutes of verification beats five days of correction. Part of me wants to trust the process and wave everyone through the gate. The other part remembers the dented plate compactor.

So if you ever pull into our yard with a mini excavator on a trailer, don't be offended when I walk around it before waving you out. It's not that I don't trust you. It's that I've already found, and fixed, the problem you haven't seen yet.
