The longer answer is where it gets important. Used JCB backhoes are a different game entirely. A 2019 or 2020 3CX with 3,000–5,000 hours might list anywhere from $45,000 to $70,000. But here's what I've learned doing this job: the cheapest machine on the lot is rarely the most affordable to own. I've seen equipment with fresh paint and new tires hiding worn-out bucket pins, hydraulic leaks, and maintenance records that read like a biography of neglect.

When I first started inspecting equipment, I assumed the best-looking machines in photos were the ones we'd approve. That completely flipped after my first year. And honestly—the quality of your bucket says something about your company. When a client sees mismatched, worn-out attachments on a nice machine, they notice. It's the equipment equivalent of showing up to a client meeting in a good suit with scuffed shoes. Weird comparison, but it's accurate.

How do you get a forklift license?

First, there's no such thing as a "forklift license" in the official sense. What you need is forklift certification under OSHA 29 CFR 1910.178. You get formal instruction from an accredited trainer, complete hands-on practice, and then pass a practical performance evaluation. OSHA requires that evaluation at least once every three years to maintain certification.

Cost-wise, third-party training usually runs $100 to $200 per operator, and many employers cover it in-house for less. You'll see online-only courses, but here's the catch: OSHA requires practical training. Online-only certification misses that component. It's a compliance risk if you get audited, and honestly it's a safety risk to put someone in a machine they've never actually operated.

Why does a heavy equipment dealer care about forklifts? Because we sell them, and because I've seen what happens when an untrained operator gets in one. A company bought a used JCB forklift from us, and their "certified" operators looked fine on paper. The data said they were trained. My gut said something was off. Turned out none of them had ever actually operated a forklift. Within two weeks they'd bent the mast and damaged a racking system. That's a $4,200 repair, a safety near-miss, and ruined product. Don't be that company.

Does the Ford fuel pump recall affect construction equipment?

Straight answer: it affects Ford trucks, and Ford trucks are all over construction sites. If you run Ford work trucks or Ford-powered utility vehicles, this matters to you even if your heavy equipment is all JCB.

Ford has issued recalls covering fuel pump failures across specific model years. The common issue involves the fuel delivery module—the pump can fail or cause power loss while driving. That's a serious hazard on a work truck carrying a crew or towing a trailer.

What you need to do: check your VINs on the NHTSA recall website. That's the only authoritative source. Don't assume a dealer will contact you—Ford has gotten better at owner notifications, but fleet trucks that changed hands a few times slip through the cracks constantly.

While you're at it, check whether any engine components in your telehandlers or older loaders are affected by related recalls. JCB uses its own engines in most current machines, but I want to say some older models had outsourced power units—don't quote me on that. The broader point is that recall tracking is part of equipment maintenance. I've flagged open recalls on incoming trade-ins more than once. Plenty of operators genuinely don't know their truck has an open recall. That's one of the silent costs of running a fleet.

Should you buy JCB parts from the dealer or aftermarket?

I'll split this in two. Attachments and wear items—buckets, teeth, cutting edges—aftermarket is genuinely fine. I run aftermarket buckets myself, and they do the job for less. But critical components? Hydraulic pumps, electronic control units, drivetrain parts. That's where OEM matters.

Here's why. I've tested aftermarket hydraulic pumps that failed after roughly 200 hours. The JCB OEM equivalent in the same application went 1,500+ hours before needing attention. The aftermarket pump was about 30% cheaper up front, but on a cost-per-hour basis, the OEM part won. That's a difference of a few dollars per operating hour—numbers that don't show up on a receipt but absolutely show up in your annual maintenance budget.

For hydraulic filters, OEM vs aftermarket is a more forgiving debate. Several of our customers run aftermarket filters without issues. But pumps, valves, and control modules live in the "buy once, cry once" category.

Bottom line: save money on wear parts and attachments. Don't cut corners on anything that keeps hydraulic fluid and electronics healthy. That's where the expensive failures live.
