Ask the dealer for the engine oil analysis reports, hydraulic system service records, final drive maintenance logs, and warranty claim history. If they can't produce these, ask why. The answer you get will tell you more about the machine than any inspection could.

Step 3: Inspect the undercarriage like your budget depends on it

Because it does. On a tracked excavator, the undercarriage accounts for 20–30% of total ownership cost, and it's the most commonly skipped inspection on my list.
