JCB Forklift Controls: The 9-Point Pre-Shift Checklist That Cut Our Emergency Calls by 70%

In my role coordinating fleet service at Tradeside Equipment, a JCB construction company that rents and services machines across Utah and Colorado, I'm the one who takes the call when something stops moving. In March 2024, a client called at 7:15 on a Thursday morning. Their JCB forklift had lost lift function on the mast, 36 hours before a county road project deadline. Normal parts lead time was four days. We found a dealer in Nevada with the right cylinder in stock, paid $380 in freight, and had the machine running by midnight. The client's alternative was a $52,000 penalty clause.

Here's the part that still bothers me. When we opened the cylinder later that week, it had been leaking for days. The operator saw it. He even told the site supervisor. Nobody wrote it down, so nobody ordered the part.

Think about this: if you looked up how to make a paper crane, you wouldn't fold the wings first. Order matters. A forklift pre-start check is the same. Skip one fold, and the bird comes out lopsided. Skip one check, and the machine will let you know later—at the worst possible moment, with an expensive repair bill attached.

I'm not a JCB engineer, so I can't speak to the internal design of every valve and seal. What I can tell you from a fleet management perspective is what our dispatch logs from 200-plus emergency calls taught us: most of them were avoidable.

Who Should Use This Checklist

If you operate, rent, or supervise JCB forklifts and telescopic handlers on construction sites, this is for you. We run every machine through it every shift. Rental customers do the same. It takes about nine minutes. That's it. Nine minutes to prevent nine days of downtime.

The 9-Point Pre-Shift Checklist

1. Walk Around the Machine. Really Look.

Before you climb into the seat, take one full, slow lap. You're looking for:

  • Oil, hydraulic fluid, or coolant on the ground
  • Soft, cut, or cracked tires—a big one on telehandlers
  • New dents or bent tie rods on the mast and boom
  • Loose bolts, cracked welds, anything that didn't look like that yesterday

If something looks new, it's a problem. New dents don't appear by themselves. In my experience, machines that come back with the most "small" findings are the same machines that fail in the middle of a contract.

2. Read the Data Plate. Every Single Day.

The capacity plate is the most ignored piece of engineering on any job site. It tells you the rated load at a specific load center, what attachments are approved, and how capacity changes when you switch them. A JCB forklift's controls will lift a load the machine shouldn't be carrying. That's not a control failure—that's physics. Most forks are rated at a 500 mm load center. Strap an odd-shaped load onto the tips, and the center shifts, and the truck can tip forward before you ever hear a warning.

Take the 20 seconds to read the plate. If a machine has no plate, don't use it. Period.

3. Inspect the Mast, Carriage, and Chains

With the engine off and the parking brake set, check the chains, rollers, hoses, and fittings. Then raise the forks a few inches and look underneath. Cracks at the carriage weld, a stiff chain link, a pushed hose—these are more common than you'd think, and they fail without a graceful warning.

Under OSHA's powered industrial truck rule (29 CFR 1910.178), a truck found in unsafe condition is supposed to be pulled from service until it's fixed. I've seen sites skip that because "the job has to go out." The job also has to go out when you're explaining a $12,000 mast repair.

4. Test the JCB Forklift Controls Before You Move

Get in the seat. Seatbelt on. Parking brake engaged. Start in neutral, let it idle, and watch the dash.

Once the machine is warmed up, run through every function at low RPM:

  • Mast raise and lower
  • Mast tilt forward and backward
  • Side shift, if fitted
  • Auxiliary functions—rotator, clamp, whichever attachment is installed
  • On telehandlers: boom extend, retract, and leveling

Feel the JCB forklift controls as they move. There should be a short neutral deadband before the cylinders respond, and no drift when you return the lever to neutral. If the mast drifts or drops, you've got a valve or cylinder that's starting to fail. That's exactly the kind of thing you want to know before you pick up a full pallet, not after.

One more test: with the forks on the ground, ease off the seat and try to raise them. If the machine has an operator presence interlock, it should stop you. That feature exists because somebody left their seat while the truck was still rolling. Don't make that somebody you.

5. Test Steering and Brakes at Crawl Speed

Move the truck at walking speed. Turn full left and full right. The steering should be smooth, with no dead spot. Hit the service brake and feel it bite evenly. Then find a slight incline, stop, and test the parking brake.

Most forklift incidents happen at speeds under 10 mph. Slow-speed handling is where you find out if the machine is genuinely safe or just fast.

6. Horn, Lights, Backup Alarm—and Your Ears

Test the horn and backup alarm. Check the lights if the machine has them. And now the one I never thought I'd have to write down:

Do not wear noise-isolating headphones while operating. I know that pair with the heavy bass—the Skullcandy Crusher Evo, or whatever the latest model is—makes the shift go faster. But when you can't hear the backup alarm or the shouted warning, you're not a more productive operator. You're a hazard with a seatbelt. Save the bass for the ride home. The only crusher that belongs on site is the attachment at the end of the boom.

Why does this matter? Because operators who can't hear are the reason we have backup alarms at all.

7. Do a Load Test With Something Light

Pick up a light, known load. Raise it to mid-height, tilt it back, lower it. On a telehandler, extend the boom and bring it back. Watch for jerky movement, bubbling in the hydraulic oil, or forks that sag after a few minutes. There will always be some settling, but a droop you can see is a red flag, not a quirk.

A healthy machine does this smoothly. That's it. If it doesn't feel smooth, don't talk yourself into it.

8. Look at the Workspace With Fresh Eyes

The checklist doesn't stop at the machine. Check the ground conditions, slopes, curbs, overhead wires, and the people moving around you. Plan your travel route before you pick the load up.

One story, because it's a perfect example of prevention over cure. A crew not far from Provo invented a game of bucket golf during a lunch break. One loader, a skid steer, and an empty bucket as the "hole." Everyone had a laugh—until the skid steer backed over a utility line. Nobody was injured. The site was shut down for a day and a half, and the repair bill was somewhere around $14,000. There's a time and a place for practice. A live jobsite isn't it.

9. Write It Down

Two minutes, and the most skipped step on this list. Mark the inspection log, the app, the clipboard sheet—whatever your company uses. Found a small leak? Write it. Steering feels slightly loose? Write it. The next shift will either be safe because you did, or they'll discover a whole new problem because you didn't.

This is the step that changed our numbers. After we enforced it in 2023, our urgent repair call-outs dropped by about two-thirds within two quarters.

Common Mistakes I Still See

After years of this work, the same mistakes show up, even with experienced operators:

  • Skipping the checklist when the site is behind schedule—which is exactly when you can't afford a breakdown.
  • Checking the machine but not writing it down, turning a known leak into a surprise for the next shift.
  • Trusting that "the rental company checked it." They did. Check it again anyway. Your license is on the line, not theirs.
  • Overconfidence on a familiar machine. The truck you drive every day deserves the same attention as the one you've never touched.

I have mixed feelings about emergency service calls. Honestly. On one hand, that's how my department earns its keep. On the other hand, nearly every one of those calls was a failure of a nine-minute checklist. I'd rather have the quiet day.

Does this checklist guarantee zero breakdowns? No. Nothing does. But it changes the ratio. And the paper-crane principle applies here too: when you follow every fold, in order, the result is almost always right. Five minutes of verification beats five days of correction.

One caveat: my experience is based on JCB telehandlers and industrial forklifts in construction rental fleets. If you're running a different kind of truck from a different manufacturer, the controls will differ. The habit won't. Walk around, read the plate, test the controls, and write it down.
