Why I Compare Cost per Hour, Not Sticker Price

I'm the procurement manager at a 40-person construction company. I manage an equipment budget of about $800,000 a year, and I've been tracking every machine hour, service invoice, and attachment purchase for the last six years. I went back and forth for two weeks. The new unit had a warranty, predictable service costs, and a better resale value. The used unit was about $40,000 cheaper and had already taken its worst depreciation hit. On paper, the decision looked obvious—buy used. But the 2019 unit needed a set of tracks sooner than the dealer guessed.

I built a TCO table for 2,000 hours:

The used unit looked like the winner until I added $15,000 for an undercarriage that the inspection said was "probably fine." Suddenly it was $58.50 per hour. The new machine was actually the safer choice for our schedule.

That's a real comparison, not a generic "buy new." If you can get a used JS130 with proof that the undercarriage was replaced, the math moves the other way. For us, the risk adjustment made the new unit worth it.

JCB 930 Forklift Specs: What Actually Changed My Mind

The project manager thought a forklift would be cheaper than another telehandler. I pulled the JCB 930 forklift specs because the 930 is the model the local dealer keeps recommending. The headline spec looked fine, but I learned to ignore the headline number and look at the load chart.

If you're setting up a worksite, keep pedestrians out of that zone whenever the forks are up. If the operator can't see the whole zone, block the aisle or use a spotter.

I'm not a safety engineer. The official answer is in the truck's operator manual and in OSHA 29 CFR 1910.178 for powered industrial trucks. But the practical cost answer is simple: it's cheaper to move a walkway than to explain why you didn't.

Bottom Line: What I'd Buy Again

For our fleet, the JS130 was the right excavator, and the new unit was worth the price because of the undercarriage risk. The JCB 930 forklift specs made it a good complement to the telehandler—not a replacement—because of the fall zone and mast height limits. The Yeti bucket pays for itself in sticky soil. And the sump pump? I'll never price another digging job without one.

This worked for us because we're a mid-size company with mixed rental and owned equipment, and we could wait out a longer payback period. If you're buying one machine for a single project, a used JS130 with a dealer inspection might make more sense. Your mileage may vary. But the process is the same: compare total cost per hour, include attachments, and put the safety line items in before the rain starts.
