Use a straight truck with a flatbed and a set of ramps, and load the mini excavator in reverse. The tail swing will be on the side opposite the operator, which means you can see the edge of the trailer clearly. If you load it forward, you'll be staring at the back of the cab and guessing where the tracks are. That guessing costs time. I've seen it cost a machine, too.
I don't say this because I read it in a manual. I say it because in my first year running a small rental outfit, I watched a new guy (it was me) drop a 3-ton machine off the side of a rented trailer because the operator's blind spot covered the entire right track. That was a $1,200 repair and a lot of yelling.
This article covers the real method for loading a mini excavator onto a straight truck—not the textbook version. There are specific things that will go wrong if you don't account for them, and I've made enough of those mistakes for both of us.
The Straight Truck Advantage (and Disadvantage)
A straight truck is any single-frame truck with the cargo area attached, as opposed to a tractor-trailer. For loading a mini excavator, a straight truck with a flatbed (or a rollback) is the standard choice. The advantage is obvious: lower deck height, shorter overall length, easier maneuvering on job sites.
The disadvantage is less obvious but more dangerous: because the bed is shorter than a trailer, the angle of your ramps will be steeper, and the balance point shifts forward. If you load a mini excavator onto a short-bed straight truck without compensating for this, you risk the machine tipping forward as it crests the deck—especially if you're using a gooseneck or a drawbar. I learned that one the hard way when the tracks hit the deck but the counterweight didn't. The machine rocked forward so hard the front of the truck lifted (ugh).
That moment taught me something no spec sheet will tell you: the angle of attack matters more than the ramp weight rating. A set of 8-foot ramps might be rated for 10,000 pounds, but on a straight truck with a 4-foot deck height, the angle is still around 20 degrees. Most mini excavators can handle that—but not all of them. The JCB 930 forklift, for instance, has a longer wheelbase, which changes the balance point compared to a compact excavator.
The 'Reverse' Rule: Why It's Not Optional
Load the mini excavator in reverse. I cannot overstate this. When the machine travels backward, the operator's cab faces the trailer deck, and the tail swing is toward the front of the truck. That means the operator can see the machine's relationship to the trailer edges. They can see where the tracks are relative to the ramp edges. They can stop before the machine falls off.
When you load forward, the operator faces the cab of the truck. The tracks are behind them. To see where the tracks are relative to the ramp, they have to twist their neck, lean out, or rely on a spotter. And spotters aren't always reliable (note to self: never trust a spotter who hasn't done this before).
In my early days, I assumed 'same method' meant loading either direction was fine. Didn't verify. Turned out my assumption cost me a bent ramp and a scratched side panel when the machine slipped. The driver couldn't see the right track and corrected into the wrong direction.
What About the JCB 560-80 Telehandler?
The JCB 560-80 telehandler is a different beast. It's longer, heavier, and has a center of gravity that shifts depending on whether the boom is extended. Load it forward, load it backward—doesn't matter as much because the cab elevates and rotates. But here's the catch: because the telehandler has a longer frame, you need longer ramps. A 10-foot ramp on a straight truck with a 4.5-foot deck height pushes the angle to about 24 degrees. That's borderline for the telehandler's undercarriage clearance. I've seen a Loadall scrape its belly on the deck edge because the ramps were too short. The operator didn't notice until they heard the scraping (ugh, again).
For the JCB 560-80, I recommend ramps at least 12 feet long, and always use the straight truck with a drop deck or a low-profile flatbed if you have access to one. Otherwise, you risk damaging the frame or the fuel tank.
Step-by-Step: The Correct Loading Sequence
Here's the sequence I use now, after about 200 loads on straight trucks (maybe 180, I'd have to check the log). It's not the only way, but it's the one that's never failed me.
- Chock the truck wheels, front and rear. Not just the parking brake. The truck can lurch when the excavator climbs the ramp. I've seen it roll forward three feet before the driver realized.
- Position the ramps so they're centered on the tracks, not the machine body. The tracks are wider than the body on most mini excavators. If you align the ramps to the center of the machine, they'll be off-center for the tracks. Measure from the outside of the tracks inward.
- Engage the boom and arm fully retracted. You want the machine's center of gravity as low and central as possible. If the boom is extended, the weight shifts forward, which increases the tipping risk on the ramp's crest.
- Load in reverse, slow and steady. No accelerating up the ramp. The ideal speed is a crawl—about 1 mph. Use low gear. If the machine starts to slide, stop and re-evaluate. Don't try to 'power through' it.
- Once the tracks crest the deck, stop immediately. Let the machine settle. Adjust the boom to level the machine, then continue until the entire machine is on the deck. If the machine tilts forward as it crests, you needed longer ramps or a lower deck height.
- Secure the machine at all four corners. Always use chains and binders on the tracks, not the undercarriage. Straps over the body are for light machines only. A 3-ton mini excavator can shift a strap in 50 feet of hard braking. Chains on the tracks are the only reliable method.
The Gas Pump Problem (That Nobody Warns Me About)
One thing I never see in loading guides: fuel level and its effect on balance. A full fuel tank on a mini excavator adds about 150-200 pounds to the front, depending on the model. On a JCB 930 forklift, the fuel tank is on the rear. On a typical mini excavator (like a Kubota KX series), the fuel tank is on the left side. That asymmetric weight distribution matters when loading on a slope or a curbed driveway.
I once loaded a machine with a full tank of diesel, and the left side was noticeably heavier than the right. The machine listed slightly on the ramp—not enough to fall, but enough to make me nervous. Now I always check the fuel level and, if possible, load the machine with the heavy side toward the center of the truck deck. It's a small thing that makes a big difference in stability.
As of April 2025, most mini excavators in the 3-5 ton range have fuel capacities between 10-15 gallons. Diesel weighs about 7.1 pounds per gallon. That's 70-105 pounds of unaccounted-for weight on one side. Consider that when planning your loading method.
When This Advice Doesn't Apply
Not every loading scenario fits this template. Consider exceptions:
- If you're using a tilt-bed trailer (not a straight truck), the loading process is different: you can simply drive the excavator onto the bed as it tilts. No ramps needed.
- If the mini excavator has a retractable undercarriage (some models do), the center of gravity shifts as the tracks widen. You might need to load with the tracks in the narrower position.
- If the straight truck has a hydraulic liftgate, loading from the rear is possible but slower and less stable. Only use this for machines under 2 tons.
This method works best for standard mini excavators (3-5 tons) on a typical straight truck with a flatbed (deck height 4-5 feet). If your truck has a drop deck or a low-profile bed, the rules change. In those cases, ramps can be shorter, and you might load forward if visibility isn't an issue. But I don't have enough personal experience with drop decks to give reliable advice (I really should test one).
That said, I do not mean to suggest that reverse loading is always the answer. If the operator is experienced and the truck deck is wide enough, forward loading is possible with a spotter. But I've been doing this for 7 years, and I've seen forward loading go wrong 3 times. I've never seen reverse loading go wrong. The numbers speak for themselves.
