In March 2024, my phone rang at 6:40 AM. A site manager for a waste transfer station upgrade was on the line. His voice had that tight, clipped tone you only hear when a deadline is already bleeding. He had 36 hours before a concrete pour and a municipal inspection. His site was missing two key machines, a garbage truck had broken down across the only access road, and the dewatering water pump had just quit.
I work as an emergency equipment specialist for a construction support company. I have handled 200+ rush orders in 11 years, including same-day turnarounds for contractors and rental fleets. My job is not to sell the biggest machine. It is to find the fastest feasible option with the least risk.
That morning, the request was simple on paper: source a 3-ton class excavator, a 13-ton class excavator, and a used JCB telehandler for sale UK. In reality, it was a logistics puzzle with three moving failures.

Triage: time, feasibility, risk
When I am triaging a rush order, I look at three things in order:
- How many hours are left?
- Can the required equipment physically get there and work in that window?
- What is the worst-case failure point?
Normal lead time for a used telehandler and two excavators was 5 to 7 days. We had 36 hours. Local rental yards had a 13-ton excavator, but not the 3-ton unit. The used market had plenty of listings, but most were private sellers with no service records. The contractor initially wanted the lowest quote. I understood why. I also knew that the lowest quote was probably the most expensive decision.

People assume the lowest quote means the vendor is more efficient. What they do not see is which costs are being hidden or deferred.
One seller offered a used JCB telehandler for £29,000. It looked clean in photos. But it had no service history, needed new tyres, and the boom needed an inspection. Add transport at £900, tyres at £2,800, boom service at £1,200, and you are already at £33,900. And you still had zero warranty and a high chance of a breakdown during the pour.
Another option was a certified used JCB telehandler from a dealer network at £34,500 all-in. It had 4,100 hours, full service records, a 3-month powertrain warranty, and delivery included. The difference was £600. The risk difference was enormous.
That is total cost thinking. The base price is just the start. TCO includes transport, setup, parts availability, downtime, and resale. For a 36-hour emergency, certainty is part of the cost.
Matching JCB excavator sizes to the job
The contractor did not need the biggest machine. They needed the right JCB excavator sizes for two different tasks. According to JCB official product pages (jcb.com), the excavator lineup ranges from around 0.8-ton mini models to roughly 37-ton tracked machines, with midi and wheeled options in between.
For this site, a 3-ton class machine was perfect for trenching near services. A 13-ton class machine handled bulk muck away and loading. We sourced a JCB 8035 ZTS and a JCB 130X through the dealer network. Both came with attachments and a familiar control layout, which mattered because the operator had to be productive immediately, not after a day of training.
Would a 22-ton excavator have worked? Maybe. But it would have been too heavy for the temporary road, slower to mobilise, and more expensive to move. Size is not about prestige. It is about cycle time, access, and cost per tonne moved.
The water pump and garbage truck problems
The water pump was the quiet killer. Without dewatering, the trench would flood and the pour would be delayed regardless of how fast we got the excavators. We added a 6-inch diesel water pump to the order and had it delivered with the telehandler. That pump cost £180 per day. Missing the pour would have triggered an £18,000 penalty clause. Do the math.
The garbage truck was another delay. It belonged to the municipal waste hauler. We could not move it ourselves. I spent 40 minutes on the phone with the site manager, the hauler dispatcher, and a local recovery company. They winched it clear by 10:15 AM. That is not glamorous emergency work, but it is the difference between a plan and a fantasy.
What I should have done earlier
Looking back, I should have arranged a backup water pump before the client called. At the time, the rental seemed optional because the existing pump was running. It was not optional. It was a single point of failure.
If I could redo that decision, I would add a spare pump to every dewatering plan as standard. But given what I knew then, the original choice was reasonable. The site had a working pump and a tight budget. The lesson is that in emergency work, redundancy is not waste. It is insurance.
The 36-hour fix
Here is how it played out:
- 6:40 AM: Client call. Three failures identified.
- 7:20 AM: Dealer network confirmed a certified used JCB telehandler and two JCB excavators.
- 9:00 AM: Water pump reserved and loaded.
- 10:15 AM: Garbage truck cleared from access road.
- 1:30 PM: Telehandler and 3-ton excavator delivered to site.
- 5:00 PM: 13-ton excavator arrived after a transport swap.
- Next day 2:40 PM: All machines running, trench dewatered, lift plan approved for a certified crane.
We had the site operational in 32 hours. The pour happened on schedule. The client avoided the penalty and, more importantly, kept their crew safe.
What this taught me about TCO
If you are buying or renting construction equipment, especially on a deadline, here is the framework I use now:
- Base price: The number on the quote.
- Transport and setup: Delivery, offloading, attachments, fuel.
- Parts and service: Is there a JCB dealer or parts catalog nearby?
- Downtime risk: What happens if it breaks during the critical path?
- Resale or return cost: For used machines, service history changes value.
The £29,000 telehandler was not cheaper. It was a £33,900 gamble with no warranty. The £34,500 certified unit was the lower-risk, lower-TCO choice for that week.
And the how to make a crane question? The answer is still no. Rent the right crane. Use the telehandler to move materials. Keep the water pump running. Check your JCB excavator sizes against the actual job, not the brochure.
That is the real emergency lesson: speed gets you to site, but total cost thinking keeps you there.
