Which Route Should You Pick?
I manage equipment purchasing for a regional contractor in the Mountain West, mostly water and sewer work. I've handled JCB orders for about six years. I have also made eleven documented buying mistakes, some of which still make me question my spreadsheet skills. This article is the checklist I wish I had before the first one.
When someone types "JCB 13 ton excavator for sale" into a search bar, the first reflex is to compare list prices and hours. I did exactly that in 2022, and it cost me. This is a dealer vs. auction comparison, but not the usual one. I'm not going to tell you the dealer is always safer or the auction is always cheaper. I will compare three dimensions: total first-year cost, documentation quality, and parts support. Those are the areas where I made my mistakes.
Dealer vs. Auction: The Framework
The lazy version of this comparison is "dealer = markup and warranty; auction = gamble and savings." The real variable is how many unknown unknowns you are willing to carry. An auction route can be smart if the machine's history is verified. A dealer route can be a waste of money if you pay for a certification and still do zero research. In my experience, the dealer advantage shows up after the sale, not in the showroom. The auction advantage shows up when the machine is known and you have time to inspect it.
Dimension 1: Price vs. First-Year Total Cost
The first JCB excavator I bought from an auction looked like a steal. It was a 13-ton machine with roughly 3,600 hours, and my winning bid was about 12 percent below a dealer quote for a similar machine. I wrote the deposit check quickly. Looking back, I should have taken the dealer quote more seriously.
Three weeks later, the machine was on our yard. The first job went okay, then minor bills started showing up: hoses, filters, a track adjuster, a battery, and a sensor. Nothing was catastrophic by itself. Together, they turned the "savings" into a thin margin. By the end of the first year, the auction route saved less than $3,500. Actually, I need to correct myself: it was closer to $2,700 once I counted freight and the mechanic's time. I exchanged $2,700 in cash for several months of uncertainty. I don't make that trade anymore.
The unexpected part was not that the auction machine needed work. It was that the dealer machine had similar small issues, but the dealer handled them under warranty without argument. The dealer quote included a warranty that acted like insurance. The auction quote did not. On that dimension, the dealer route was not the more expensive route. It was just priced differently.
Dimension 2: Paperwork vs. Promises
When you buy from a JCB dealer, you can ask for maintenance records. If the machine was serviced by that dealer, the records are usually available. That does not guarantee a perfect machine. It does mean somebody can be asked a question after the sale. That is worth more than I used to think.
When you buy at auction, the condition report is not service history. A report that says "runs and operates" says very little about whether the machine is ready for a full season. The seller's agent has an interest in moving the machine, not in helping you avoid a repair bill. I am not saying auctioneers are dishonest. I am saying their incentives are different from yours.
My current rule: if the machine is more than a few hours away, pay an independent mechanic to inspect it before the auction. The inspection costs a few hundred dollars. The skipped inspection has cost me thousands. Ask a fifth-grade-level question: why would a seller not allow an inspection? If there is no good answer, there is your answer.

The part of the comparison I ignored for too long is parts support. I learned that lesson on a backhoe, not an excavator. The alternator failed. A local shop offered to rebuild the old one, and an online seller offered a generic replacement for even less. I chose generic because I compared the price of two alternators instead of the cost of a broken machine.
The generic unit fit, but it did not charge consistently. I have never fully understood why it was wrong; my best guess is that the pulley or internal regulator was not matched correctly. The lesson was: compare the total cost per working hour, including installation, downtime, and repeat failure risk.

If the machine sits for two weeks waiting for a part, the low price stops mattering. That is especially true for something like an alternator, where the part price is small but downtime is not.
According to JCB's dealer directory at jcb.com (accessed April 2025), an authorized dealer is the source for genuine parts and original service records. I do not assume every part is in stock, but a dealer can usually get it faster than I can trace a generic part number online.

I almost named my checklist that because the expensive mistakes I made came from skipping basic questions, not from failing to negotiate cleverly.
What is this machine's main job for the next three years? Why is it being sold? Who serviced it, and can they prove it? What part is most likely to fail, and where can I get it tomorrow? If I buy it, what happens to my other projects when it breaks? If you cannot answer those, you are not smarter than a 5th grader. You are just louder in the auction.
Drill Presses, Willow Pumps, and the Same Trap
I know it is strange for a JCB equipment article to mention a drill press and a willow pump. I am not going to pretend I know much about either. But they illustrate the same error: comparing price before defining the job. A drill press is made for precise vertical holes. A willow pump, if that is the product you are researching, has its own spec sheet for a reason. If you do not know what a tool is supposed to do, a low price tells you almost nothing. That is exactly how I ended up paying twice for a machine that looked cheap at the auction.
Which Route Should You Pick?
If you need the machine on a paying job within two weeks and your team does not have a dedicated equipment mechanic, buy from an authorized JCB dealer. You are not paying extra; you are prepaying for warranty support and parts response. If you have time, an independent inspector, and a machine that comes with verifiable service history, the auction route can work. I know because I still own the auction machine. It is now a good machine, but it had to earn my trust before it joined the main fleet.
This works for my region. Your dealer network, mechanic schedule, and rental market may be different, and the calculus changes. Prices and availability also change. Verify current stock and part pricing with an authorized JCB dealer before you write your next bid. Use the total-cost-per-working-hour number, not the lowest sticker price.
