It started with an email subject line that looked like a practical joke: “Telehandler, pump, scraper.”

The message said: “Can you price the JCB 520 telehandler for sale at the dealer in Ridgefield? Need it on site by the 17th. Also ask if they can quote a bilge pump and a scraper.”

I handle purchasing for a 60-person site-services company. Since 2021, I’ve managed vendor contracts, equipment orders, and support logistics—roughly $800,000 a year across a mix of suppliers. I do not operate heavy machinery, and I do not pretend to read a load chart like a crane trainer. Was the extra cost painful? Yes. The machine paid for itself in avoided crane rental and manual handling risk.

I am glad I made the call to wait. Actually, I am glad I made the call after admitting I did not have enough information. If I had signed the original purchase order, I would have looked efficient for about a week. Then the crew would have discovered the mismatch on site, in the rain, with a pump basket hanging in the air. That is how a procurement mistake becomes a safety incident.
