1. What does JCB compact track loader service actually cost?

This is the first thing people ask me after seeing the purchase price. Service is where the real money goes. For a compact track loader, a standard service—oil, filters, hydraulic inspection, greasing everything that moves—will run you somewhere between $350 and $600 if the machine isn't beat up. That's at dealer rates, circa 2025, for a machine in decent shape.

If you're doing a full service with a hydraulic oil flush, final drive inspection and the 500-hour belt check, you're looking at $1,200 to $2,000.

Here's something vendors won't tell you: the dealer's 'recommended service intervals' often include buffer time. It's not that the intervals are wrong. It's that dealers would rather you come in a little early than crack a $9,000 final drive. If you keep meticulous records and check your filters yourself, you can sometimes stretch to the outer edge of the range without damaging anything.

The flip side is also true. I've seen a $2,500 maintenance 'saving' turn into a $14,000 track replacement. Five minutes of greasing a day beats five days of downtime. That's not a slogan, that's an invoice.

2. Is a JCB compact track loader worth it for a small contractor?

Depends on what you mean by worth it. The sticker price on a JCB is not the cheapest. But I track total cost of ownership (i.e., not just the sticker but resale, service intervals, repair rates, and downtime).

In 2023, I compared three loader brands across a five-year ownership model. JCB came out about $4,100 cheaper overall than the budget option, even though its initial quote was $6,200 higher. The cheaper machine had more grease points, a thinner dealer network, and a resale curve that fell off a cliff after year four.

But if you're only putting 200 hours a year on a compact track loader, you probably shouldn't buy one at all. Rent it. The two main types are articulating (the arm bends) and telescopic (straight arm extends). Telescopic is the better call for straight-up work like gutter, exterior painting or electrical. Articulating gives you more reach for complex jobs—over edges, into deep structures.

Boom lifts are different from scissor lifts. A scissor lift only goes straight up. A boom lift can move the platform around the structure while elevated.

Per OSHA rules, anyone operating a boom lift must be trained and certified by a qualified trainer. That's not a suggestion; it's 29 CFR 1926.453. Rental yards usually include basic training, but it's on you, the employer, to document it.

For most contractors, renting beats buying because you're not paying for storage or annual inspections. If you're using one more than 15 times a year, the math starts to shift.

4. Can a propane generator save you money on site?

Propane generators have a legitimate cost story. Propane burns cleaner than gasoline, which means fewer oil changes and less carburetor trouble. It also sits in storage indefinitely without gumming up, which is an advantage when you're moving between sites.

Fuel costs are where it gets interesting. Propane's energy density is lower than diesel, so you're getting less runtime per dollar in most states. But the equipment itself often costs less, and maintenance is noticeably cheaper over a 2,000-hour life.

One thing to watch: some manufacturers lean hard into 'environmentally friendly' marketing. Per FTC guidelines, claims like 'zero emissions' or 'green' require substantiation. Propane does produce CO2; it's not emission-free. It just burns cleaner than gasoline or diesel. The FTC page on environmental claims spells this out.

Our take: if you want to reduce maintenance and don't need diesel's fuel economy, propane is worth a serious look. Just don't believe the 'saving the planet' pitch.

5. Should I buy the JCB kids backhoe for my son?

This is the easiest yes I'll give you all year—with a caveat.

A JCB branded toy backhoe costs about $50 to $120 depending on size and features (think metal body, working bucket, none of them are $30). It's real enough to survive a sandbox, cheap enough that you won't panic when it gets left in the rain, and weirdly educational. My nephew figured out fulcrum points at age five because he was trying to lift his older brother. His brain is a headcanon generator—he's got entire stories about 'Diesel the Digger' saving the construction site.

The caveat: it's a toy. It will not survive being treated like an actual compact track loader. If you want to teach cause and effect, get a real machine. If you want to develop an operator who respects equipment, start them with something that can break, and let them feel what happens when it does.

You won't be developing a skilled operator with a toy, but you might be developing a future customer who already knows the brand. I'm fine with that.

6. How do I plan JCB maintenance without getting burned?

Plan for the worst, hope for the best—and put your plan in writing.

I built a 12-point checklist after the third time a 'minor service' turned into a surprise repair bill. That checklist has caught a frayed hydraulic hose, a failing belt, and two worn rollers before they became failures. Conservative estimate: $8,000 in potentially billable downtime avoided. That's the most profitable document in my office.

Here's the system I use:

  • Track hours religiously. Never estimate. I once estimated a loader's hours as 1,400 when it had actually done 2,600. The parts quote made me hate myself.
  • Check fluid levels and grease points daily, even if it's only 10 minutes.

Downtime. It's not the parts, not the labor—it's what you don't earn while the machine sits in the shop.

People get fixated on hourly repair costs versus resale value. But when a loader is down for four days, that's 32 hours of rental cost on a replacement, plus the higher cost of a mobile mechanic who has to come to you. I've seen 'routine' maintenance bills turn into $5,000 jobs because nobody checked the final drive hours on the work order.

Here's the industry secret: the first quote for service is not the final quote. Ever. There's always 'we found something else when we opened it up.' I've started adding a 15% contingency line item to maintenance requests, just so the margins don't eat my monthly numbers.

Bottom line: check everything when you take delivery, schedule service before you need it, and set money aside for the thing that breaks anyway. It's not pessimistic. It's procurement.
