JCB Equipment FAQ: Answers From a Buyer Who's Made Every Mistake

In that time, I've personally made—and documented—enough expensive mistakes to total somewhere around $12,000 in wasted budget. I keep a checklist now so my team doesn't repeat them. These are the questions that come up most often, answered the way I wish someone had answered them for me back in 2019.

Is the JCB 200 excavator still worth buying in 2025?

Short answer: yes, if you're looking for a 20-ton class machine and you inspect the right things. I've worked with roughly 30 JCB machines over the years—maybe 28, I'd have to count—mostly excavators and telehandlers. The 200 is a solid all-rounder for excavation, site prep, and light demolition.

But here's where I nearly got burned: I was considering a 2019 JCB 200 with 4,100 hours, and the price was tempting enough that I almost signed without checking undercarriage wear. Everyone asks about hours and service history. Almost nobody checks sprocket, idler, and pin wear—until they're looking at an $8,000–$15,000 repair. I'd rather spend $400 on a dealer inspection than make that mistake.

As of Q1 2025, the 200 still competes well in the 20-ton segment, but models change, and so do options. If you're buying used, get the serial number and pull the original spec sheet from JCB's site. Know what you're actually getting. (I should also mention: my experience is U.S.-based, mostly in Utah, Nevada, and Arizona. Dealer support will vary elsewhere.)

What's the biggest mistake when buying JCB telehandler forks?

Capacity. Everyone checks capacity. Almost no one checks carriage compatibility—and that was a $620 lesson for me. I ordered a pair of 5,500-lb pallet forks, verified they were rated for the machine, and never once looked at the carriage width or pin spacing. They arrived and didn't fit the quick-attach frame. Not even close.

What most people don't realize: telehandler forks are spec'd to the carriage, not just the machine. You need the carriage width, the pin spacing (distance between the lock pins, not the overall frame), and fork thickness. A dealer parts guy summed it up: "Measure the carriage, not the spec sheet." Also, different fork types—construction, agricultural, general-purpose—are built for different loads. Construction forks are what you want for most job sites.

It takes one phone call with your serial number to get the right compatibility info. I didn't make that call. Don't be me.

Can I use an engine hoist to lift excavator parts?

It works until it doesn't. Let me tell you about the day I pulled a hydraulic pump off a JCB 210 with a 2-ton engine hoist. The pump weighed around 350 pounds—well within rating. I extended the boom fully, hooked it up, and started lifting. The load swung off-center, the hoist tipped slightly, and the pump swung into the machine frame. Cracked the housing. $1,400 for a new pump plus a three-day delay on a paying job.

Here's something vendors won't tell you: an engine hoist's rated capacity assumes a centered load and shorter boom positions. Extend the boom and the effective capacity drops—significantly. I had the boom maxed out, which meant we were right at the edge. In hindsight, I should have used a load leveler, kept the boom as short as possible, and supported the load with straps before doing anything else. (Also: chock the wheels. I didn't. The whole unit slid two inches when the load swung. That was the two inches that cracked the housing.)

A hoist is okay for occasional jobs if you respect the load chart and keep the load centered. If you do this weekly, get a proper gantry or overhead crane and stop improvising.

How to know if a water pump is bad before you replace it

Cooling system "failures" are the most misdiagnosed issue I've run into. On JCB's EcoMax engines, the genuine signs are:

  • Coolant leaking from the weep hole on the pump (the classic one)
  • Temperature creeping up at idle or under load
  • A whine or squeal from the front of the engine—usually misattributed to the pump
  • Milky oil on the dipstick in severe cases (coolant in the oil)

The trap: belts, idlers, and loose hoses can produce the same noises and drips. I replaced a perfectly good water pump on a telehandler in 2022 because of a squeal that turned out to be a loose idler pulley. $230 for the pump plus a full day of labor, and the noise came right back the following week. Now I check the belt tension first, inspect the weep hole for dried coolant stains, and pressure-test the system before I condemn anything.

If you're still unsure, a mechanic with a thermal camera or ultrasonic probe can pinpoint it in minutes. That diagnostic fee is a fraction of a needless pump swap.

Can I wear Skullcandy Crusher ANC 2 headphones on a job site?

I get asked this more than I expected—usually by younger operators. The Skullcandy Crusher ANC 2 is genuinely good at what it does: deep bass, long battery, and noise cancellation that really does block out engine noise. That last part is exactly why I banned them after an incident in 2024.

One of my operators was wearing a pair while moving a JCB toward a trench edge. The ANC worked so well that he never heard the spotter's warning. We stopped in time—thankfully—but the margin was too thin for comfort.

Here's the rule I use now: hearing protection means ISO-rated ear muffs or plugs, full stop. Consumer noise-canceling headphones are not safety equipment. If you want music on site, use construction-grade communication headsets with ambient sound pass-through. And by all means, keep the Crusher ANC 2s—they're great for the truck, the gym, or the flight home. Just not the job site.

How do I avoid buying the wrong JCB parts online?

Parts ordering is where I've made most of my documented mistakes—well over $2,000 in wrong or failed parts. The most expensive one: in 2023, I bought what I thought was a compatible hydraulic filter kit for a JCB 200. The threads fit, but the flow rating was wrong. The filter collapsed around 120 hours in and sent debris through the hydraulic system. That turned into a $3,200 repair.

What I should have done from the start: use JCB's official parts catalog online and search by serial number. The correct part numbers are right there. Third-party suppliers are fine for some things, but you're responsible for knowing the OEM cross-reference. I didn't, and I paid for it.

I'd also suggest checking dealer stock before you order elsewhere. Many JCB dealers carry large online inventories, and when you factor in compatibility risk and return shipping, dealer-verified parts are often the cheaper route for anything hydraulic or safety-critical.

What's the most overlooked thing when buying a used JCB telehandler?

Everyone checks hours, tires, and boom function. Most buyers completely miss the carriage quick-attach plate. I'm not saying that just because of my fork incident—the pins on the quick-attach wear out, and replacing that plate is expensive. I skipped a dealer inspection in 2021 on a used telehandler and found a cracked weld at the boom pivot two weeks after purchase. $2,500 to fix.

Here's my checklist now when looking at a used telehandler:

  • Cycle the boom fully extended and retracted; listen for clunks or grinding.
  • Inspect hydraulic hoses for swelling or milky fluid (that's water contamination).
  • Check the quick-attach plate pins and the connection between plate and carriage.
  • Test directional shuttle and brakes. Transmission issues are the most common expensive surprise.
  • Pay for a dealer inspection if you're not a mechanic. $300–$400 is nothing next to a $2,500 repair.

The used telehandler market has been moving fast as of early 2025. Machines sell quickly, which creates pressure to decide fast—and that's exactly when mistakes happen. Give yourself the extra day and check the parts that are hard to see.
