The cheaper machine had a 90-day parts lead time on its hydraulic pump. The dealer's delivery window was "estimated," not guaranteed. Other brands make good hydraulic systems too. I won't pretend otherwise. But when we tracked our fleet's maintenance logs across roughly 30 machines, the repair frequency on some alternatives was noticeably higher after year four. Hydraulic pump replacements on certain competitive machines came in at 5,000-6,000 hour intervals. Our JCB units went longer with only routine maintenance. I told our dealer "as soon as possible." They heard "whenever convenient." The part arrived Tuesday. Not ideal, but workable? To be fair, Caterpillar and Komatsu have strong networks too. But in the mid-size wheel loader segment, JCB's parts availability beats the budget import brands by a mile. And because JCB shares hydraulic components across models, dealers can pull interchangeable parts from a broader stock.

We didn't always have a formal equipment replacement process. Cost us when unauthorized rush fees showed up on invoices—twice. I finally created a verification checklist: part compatibility confirmed, timeline agreed in writing, rush fees approved before ordering. Should've done it after the first time.

Dimension 4: Resale Value—Where Buyers Get It Wrong

Here's the surprise. The premium-priced brand doesn't always hold its value best. And the budget brand doesn't always lose the most.

JCB wheel loaders do hold value well in our resale experience. A clean JCB with 6,000-8,000 hours still draws solid offers, because global demand is strong. Dealers buy them for export, and that keeps a floor under used prices.

But some European premium brands? They actually depreciate harder than you'd think. Their dealer labor rates scare off used buyers, and the market for out-of-warranty repairs thins out. Meanwhile, budget machines depreciate the most in dollars but still move because they're cheap.

If you hold a machine to end-of-life, the resale calculation barely matters. But if you replace equipment every five to seven years, resale value is a huge part of TCO. Market Context: Read the Room Before You Commit

Before you sign anything, it's worth asking: what is the sentiment of crane company stock right now? That sounds esoteric, but crane and heavy equipment stock sentiment correlates with construction equipment orders a few quarters down the line. When investors are confident in equipment makers, contractors tend to be ordering. When that sentiment sours, the market softens—dealers carry more inventory, and pricing gets more negotiable.

That context matters for timing. In a hot market, manufacturer backlogs stretch 16-20 weeks on new loaders. In a soft market, you can negotiate and maybe get quicker delivery. Buy accordingly.

The same TCO logic applies to smaller equipment, by the way. You'll find Honda generators on nearly every professional job site—they've earned that position through thousands of reliable running hours. The premium price is justified because the total cost over ten years is lower. That's TCO thinking applied to a $1,500 purchase. The only difference with a wheel loader is the zeroes.

And one more observation. I've seen contractors pull a mini loader behind a Denali truck and claim they've got the whole fleet sorted. The Denali is a great truck, don't get me wrong. But a towing package doesn't replace a supply chain. When the loader breaks, you still need a dealer with parts in stock. The truck won't fix that.

Bottom Line: What Should You Buy?

Let me make this practical.

Choose a JCB wheel loader if:

  • You don't have an in-house shop and depend on dealer support
  • Your projects carry deadline penalties
  • You plan to sell within five to seven years
  • You want predictable hydraulic system reliability

Consider alternatives if:

  • You have mechanics who can handle major repairs in-house
  • You're running light duty cycles where the machine won't be pushed hard
  • You'll run the machine to end-of-life and resale doesn't matter
  • The price gap is big enough to cover the projected downtime risk

My experience is based on about 200 procurement jobs, mostly mid-size construction projects across North America. If you're in heavy mining or large-scale earthmoving, your numbers will differ. Do the math with your own data.

But the core principle doesn't change: a $14,000 saving on purchase price means nothing when the machine sits for three weeks waiting on a $500 part. The real price of the cheap machine only shows up when you can't afford to wait.
